Suffolk Saxons, the region’s first professional badminton team taking part in the AJ Bell National Badminton League, announced its third signing last night at the annual flagship Willis Rooftop Garden Party, organised by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. Sean Vendy is the second male player to join the team, following the signing of Andy Ellis and his partner Sarah Walker last month.
Aged just 20 years old, Vendy is one of England’s most exciting young stars. He started playing the sport at the age of five and has had a stellar junior career. Vendy has won National Junior Championship gold medals every year since winning the U11 Nationals aged 10, ten years ago. Last year he was crowned double U19 national champion, winning both the Men’s Doubles and Men’s Singles at the National Junior Championships.
Vendy is now part of the England senior set up and the Suffolk Saxons will bring him a new challenge, having played for Milton Keynes Dons in the AJ Bell NBL for the past two years. Vendy says, “I am good at what I do but I am always striving to be better. I’m excited to join the Suffolk Saxons and develop my senior badminton career.”
Vendy has been described by AJ Bell NBL ambassador Nathan Robertson as being “made for the NBL.” His fast and flamboyant style is sure to appeal to the crowds of Suffolk when the season commences in October.
Vendy was announced by head coach Anthony Clark at the Willis Rooftop Garden Party, hosted by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. Clark and Vendy presented awards to the winners of four fitness challenges, devised by Abbeycroft Leisure.
Richard Hunt, Chair of the Suffolk Saxons Management group, said “Sean’s signing is another big step in creating a successful Suffolk Saxons team that the whole of the County can get behind. It’s a really exciting time for sport in Suffolk, and a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved in partnering with the Saxons and being part of our journey in creating another sporting success story in Suffolk.”
Anthony Clark, Head Coach, said “Sean is another fantastic signing to join the team. We are building a strong side who are not only excellent players, but ambassadors for the sport who are truly passionate at the game, and we are looking forward to bringing elite badminton to Suffolk."
